UN nuclear senior official makes high-level visit to Tehran

(MENAFN) A senior representative from the UN nuclear watchdog visited Tehran on Monday for high-level discussions, marking the first such visit since Iran halted its cooperation with the agency in June, according to state media.

Massimo Aparo, deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with officials from Iran’s Foreign Ministry and nuclear authorities.

The talks focused on establishing a "future framework for cooperation" following Iran’s suspension of collaboration, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told local news sources. He noted that both sides agreed to continue consultations moving forward.

Gharibabadi also criticized the IAEA for what he described as a lack of response to alleged "aggression" against Iran and called for reforms to the agency’s "flawed processes" concerning Iran’s nuclear program.

In late June, Iran’s parliament suspended cooperation with the IAEA, blaming Israel and the United States for recent strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and the assassination of scientists earlier that month.
