Iran Upholds Commitments to IAEA Safeguards

(MENAFN) Iran continues to uphold its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and maintains its safeguards agreement with the United Nations nuclear watchdog, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Tuesday.

"In fulfilling these safeguards obligations, we are maintaining interactions with the IAEA while taking into account the parliament's law, which designates the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) as the authority responsible for decisions on cooperation with the agency," Baghaei said.

The comprehensive safeguards agreement gives the IAEA the authority and responsibility to verify that all nuclear material within a country's territory, jurisdiction, or control is not diverted for nuclear weapons or other explosive devices.

Baghaei emphasized that certain parts of Iran’s cooperation with the agency represent "routine collaborations" consistent with national interests, citing examples such as fuel replacement at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and oversight of the Tehran research reactor.

Earlier this year, Iran paused its engagement with the IAEA under a parliamentary law, citing the agency’s failure to condemn Israeli and U.S. attacks on its nuclear facilities and raising concerns about the safety of its sites and scientists.

Following the suspension, Baghaei said, any agency requests are reviewed individually by the SNSC and acted upon in line with the council’s decisions.
